On the Blogosphere: Second Life Friendships

Canadian Jenny Bullough calls her blog The Newbie: The adventures of a wide-eyed innocent in the digital world. Since I’m a bit of a newbie to the blogosphere myself, I was interested to read Jenny’s take on Redefining Friendship.

She writes: “I'm stoked to be going shopping in Second Life twice in the next few days -- tonight for skins, and Monday with the After a Fashion gang for bikinis. Not just because I've been hankering for a new skin, and a bikini to properly show it off, but because it gives me a chance to socialize with my dear friends Eden and Kate.”

If you’ve been living under a rock like me and haven’t signed on or even heard about it yet, Second Life (SL) is a 3-D virtual world that has enticed more than 7 million members from around the globe since it was created in late 2006...

Jenny points out that social media (all the different tools on the web that enable people to converse and share information and experiences with each other one another---like forums, message boards, email, file-sharing, wikis, and weblogs) have redefined the essence of friendship for her and many other women. “To me, shopping in SL with my After a Fashion friends is the same as shopping in real life (except that I'm much less likely to do it in real life because I hate trying on clothes),” she wrote.

Jenny grew up on a commune in Central Ontario, which was then devoid of running water and electricity; I grew up in New York City with easy access to telephones and electric typewriters. But both our friendships have been radically altered by the advent of the internet. Technology has given women a new tool to meet new friends from around the world and to nurture the relationships they make in real-life.

Thanks for your comment on

Thanks for your comment on my blog! In response to your comment: skins are just that, skins that you purchase for your Second Life avatar. Unlike real life, where you're more or less stuck with the skin you're in, in Second Life you can buy a multitude of varying skins with different tones (pale, tan, medium) and makeup styles (daytime, evening, sultry). Your website is fascinating and I've bookmarked your blog so I can come back and get caught up on all the entries. What an interesting topic to be writing about! I've filled in your survey and would be happy to speak with you more on the topic of friendship, and how social media is redefining it. I'm very curious and would love to know how you came across my blog! I find the ways in which people meet and intersect in the blogosphere endlessly fascinating and would love to find out the circumstances that led you to my little corner! :) Finally, just to clarify -- I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that Central Ontario itself has had running water and electricity for decades and it was readily available should the commune members have wished to avail themselves of the mod cons. No, believe it or not, going without was a deliberate choice on their part. Go figure. Me, I like my showers hot and my appliances automatic! :) Jenny (the Newbie)

To my new friend, Jenny

Hi Jenny,

Thanks for accepting my LinkedIn invitation and also for posting on this blog.

I use Google Alert to keep track of stuff on the web related to female friendship. Much of it is pretty mundane but I often find research studies I wouldn't have known about, interesting articles in newspapers from around the globe, and great blog posts (like yours).

It would be great if I could interview you about how social media are redefining friendship for women. Can you email me?

Best,

Irene
