Online friendships: Real or virtual?

With the growing popularity of social networking sites like My Space and Facebook, we are witnessing a paradigm shift that may well redefine the nature of friendship, suggests Libby Brooks, an editor with the UK Guardian, in a recent blog post, What’s in a Friendship. She points out a demographic divide: Almost one of every two teenagers has an online profile compared to only one in five adults.

What are your thoughts? Are online friendships qualitatively the same as those off-line? Are they harder or easier to make? Are they richer or more superficial? Are the friendships more fleeting? Are they just as rewarding as the real thing?

Two years ago I signed up

Two years ago I signed up for this social networking site called Myspace - its huge now, but I had no idea what it was before signing up. A few of my friends convinced me to make a page, so I did...fast forward three months and I was slowly becoming a true myspacer. I met one person online, a really cool woman living in DC...she started a very popular blog and now 2+ yrs later, I consider her to be a very close friend, though I'm never sure if thats ok or even normal? I wish there were more about online friendships...online. iJackalope.blogger.com

Hi IJackalope.blogger.com

I tried to find your blog but couldn't. Can you tell me the URL?

What do you want to learn about online friendships? The Pew Internet and American Life Project has tons of information.

Do you have specific questions that I might address in an upcoming blog?

Best,

Online Friendships

Hi Irene - great blog! I do think that online friendships are very real -- or at least they are in my case. But I also think it's important to have face-to-face time with friends, too. As a writer, it's easy for me to get caught up in my own little world within 10 square feet, but it's important both physically and emotionally to get out and interact with people. Friendship in your pajamas

I agree with you, Jane. But when you're working at home, it sure is nice to have friends at your fingertips!

Online friendships

Living online is isolating. Without online friends, the only "person" I'd talk to many days is Spike, and he's not much of a conversationalist. Jennie Phipps jennielp@earthlink.net
